1st Arab female student to win NASA Competition is Palestinian-Jordanian

While space explorers focused on the examination of Mars or the moon, a Palestinian-Jordanian university student grew a brilliant dedication for the exploration of the icy Pluto. Ayat Amr, who was at  the time a fourth year student at the Faculty of Computer Engineering at the Hashemite University, proposed a robot model to explore Pluto with its cold frozen surface. Going her own way, she captured NASA’s attention, becoming the first Arab female student to win NASA’s prestigious award.

Ayat became interested in robotics and programming early on in her life. At the age of 14, she began saving money to participate in a local robotics competition. From there she moved forward, never letting the lack of financial support hold her back. Later she participated in Microsoft’s programming competition to be announced as the best programmer in the Arab world and she came in fourth place worldwide. By 2014, Ayat was the youngest engineer to participate in the IEEE board meeting in Poland.

After going through a lot of struggles to participate in NASA’s competitions, in 2015, she finally decided to propose her project under a NASA  program to choose 15 innovative ideas to support. On the 26th of June 2016, she received the exciting news that she’s one of the competition’s winners. Winning the competition means that Ayat will get NASA’s help to develop her own project along with a 6 months training program in the US Agency.

Ayat Amr is now studying engineering at Stanford University with a scholarship, and she’s getting her training in NASA’s Johnson Space Centre. Ayat’s passion for space exploration is promising and we might have our first female, Arab astronomer within a couple of years.

Don’t forget to share the Baraka and to leave a smile :)  !
