Suspended sentence for cabbie who kicked colleague in groin is upheld

DUBAI // An attempt to get a harsher sentence for a taxi driver who kicked his colleague in the groin, causing him a permanent disability, has failed.

The driver was given a suspended three-month sentence by Dubai Criminal Court, which prosecutors appealed and lost.

The incident happened on September 29 last year when the 25-year-old Pakistani was waiting to start his shift but his compatriot was 10 minutes late.

When the victim, 53, arrived at Oud Al Mutainah to hand over the cab, he was screamed at and insulted by the angry cabbie, who then started hitting his colleague in the face.

The victim covered his face in self-defence only to be kicked in the genitals, after which an ambulance was called by passers-by. The victim was taken to Dubai Hospital while his attacker was arrested.

After treatment, the victim still suffered from severe pain in his groin so he flew home to seek further treatment. His condition has improved slightly but he is still receiving treatment.

However, he attended court in April and dropped the charges against his colleague.

A medical report estimated his injury to be a 15 per cent permanent disability in his groin.
